Carnelian Gua Sha

A gua sha is a smooth-edged tool, traditionally made from stone (such as jade or rose quartz), metal, or ceramic, that is used to gently massage the skin. It originated in traditional Chinese medicine, where gua sha refers to a technique involving repeated strokes across the skin. Modern facial gua sha uses much lighter pressure than the body treatment.

Facial gua sha

People commonly use a facial gua sha to:

  • Reduce puffiness: Gentle strokes may help move fluid through the lymphatic system, temporarily reducing facial puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline.
  • Relieve muscle tension: It can help relax tight muscles in the jaw, forehead, neck, and
    • face.
    • Improve circulation: The massage increases blood flow to the skin, which can give a temporary healthy-looking glow.
    • Support skincare: Using a facial oil or serum allows the tool to glide smoothly and may help distribute the product evenly.
    • Promote relaxation: Many people find the slow, repetitive movements calming and use gua sha as part of a self-care or mindfulness routine.

    Body gua sha

Traditional body gua sha is different from facial gua sha. It uses firmer pressure and can intentionally create temporary red or purple marks (called sha), which usually fade over several days. Some people use it to address muscle soreness or stiffness.

  • Research suggests gua sha may provide short-term relief for certain types of neck, shoulder, or back pain, but more high-quality studies are needed to understand its overall effectiveness.

How to use a facial gua sha

    1. Clean your face.
    2. Apply a facial oil or moisturizer so the tool glides easily.
    3. Hold the gua sha at about a 15–45° angle against your skin.
    4. Use light pressure and stroke outward and upward.
    5. Repeat each stroke 3–10 times.
    6. Clean the tool after each use.
    7. Avoid dragging the skin or pressing hard, especially around the delicate eye area.
