About Us
What makes us unique?
- We cut and polish many of our own gemstones, which means a large part of our collection consists of one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces you won’t find anywhere else. Working directly with the materials also allows us to price our products fairly, without relying on middlemen.
- We are a small, family-run business with a brick-and-mortar retail shop in Somerset West. When you buy from us, you’re dealing with real people, and you can trust that our refunds and returns policy will always be honoured.
- We’ve been in business for over 25 years, giving our customers confidence that they’re buying from a stable, dependable company with long-standing experience in the crystal and gift trade.
- Our story began in June 2000 as Healths Bells, a gift shop and vegetarian restaurant in Knysna that quickly became a popular destination for both local and international visitors. From there, the business grew to multiple outlets in Knysna and eventually to Calypso in Somerset West, where we continue the same hands-on, quality-focused approach today.
Why Calypso?
In Greek mythology, Calypso was the daughter of the Titan Oceanus, living on the island of Ogygia, where she welcomed the hero Odysseus and surrounded him with beautiful treasures and generous hospitality. The name reflects our love of carefully chosen objects and the idea of a shop filled with interesting, thoughtful finds.
Calypso Gems Gifts & Incense is a crystal and gift shop located at the Circle Centre in Somerset West. Alongside our physical store, we have expanded our website to include online shopping, with new products being added regularly as our collection grows.
We are proud to be a popular destination shop and are grateful for the feedback we receive from customers every day — from comments about the variety and beauty of our products to the friendly, helpful nature of our staff. If you prefer to shop in person and enjoy seeing and handling items before buying, we warmly invite you to visit us at the Circle Centre, just off Caledon Street in Somerset West.
